NGC 3628 – The Hamburger galaxy

NGC 3628 is an edge-on spiral galaxy that is also part of the group called the “Leo Triplet”, along with galaxies M65 and M66.

A dense region of neutral hydrogen that is not rotating has been detected in this galaxy and appears to have been removed from the spiral arms. This latter feature is visible in the images as a very large spiral arm with dust lanes running through it. This feature is what makes it look like a hamburger.
