NGC 5394-5395 – The Heron galaxy

The Heron Galaxy is a strange and rather spectacular formation of two gravitationally merged galaxies. The two galaxies are identified NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 while the set is identified Arp 84 in Halton Arp’s catalog of peculiar galaxies. NGC 5395 is the larger of the two. They are in the constellation of the Hunting Dogs, 150 million light-years from us. The darker bands are star forming areas.
