NGC 6946 – The Fireworks Galaxy

Description:

NGC 6946 earned its nickname Fireworks Galaxy because it has hosted ten supernovae since 1917. NGC 6946 is one of the most prolific galaxies in the sky in terms of supernova rates, about 10 times the rate of the Milky Way. What is even more remarkable is that our galaxy contains twice as many stars as NGC 6946.

It is located 18 million light-years from us.
