The Sun on December 8, 2022

Description:

Here is a good comparison of what can be observed on the sun through different filters.

The bottom left photo shows the sun in natural colors with the use of a solar filter that reduces the brightness by 99.999% without changing the color. We can see the sunspots, which are slightly less hot zones and from which emanate gigantic prominences (invisible without a special filter) of magnetized plasma.

The top right photo shows the same region but through a filter that only passes the narrow, so-called hydrogen-alpha wavelength. These filters are hyper-specialized and very expensive. This allows us to see deeper into the layers of the sun all the intense activity.
