The sun on May 10, 2024
Description:
On the evening of May 10, 2024, an intense magnetic storm erupted on Earth, causing aurora borealis of a rarely seen intensity. This magnetic storm occurred following the arrival of particles ejected by the Sun during a violent eruption whose starting point is the active region numbered 3664. This region, or sunspot group, is clearly visible in the photo below and is considered one of the largest in modern history.
The first photo was taken using a small William Optics GT81 telescope and a Daystar Quark Gemini H-alpha filter which has a four times magnifying element.
The second photo was taken using the same telescope but with a regular solar filter. A ZWO ASI 174 camera was used to take a short video from which the best exposures were extracted and superimposed to improve the contrast and produce this final photo.
